I just moved into my apartment yesterday—as I do every month. I’m now enjoying a sunlit artist’s loft a few blocks from the beautiful clear waters of the Turkish Mediterranean.
Finding a place to live is always top of mind, as I travel faster than most, usually staying only a month in each country before moving on. This peripatetic approach means I have to be laser-focused on finding my next place to live.
While I’m open to the world, a few factors are important to me (in order of priority): safety, cleanliness, walkability, visa situation, and cost. I also enjoy access to an outside space like a balcony. Fast wifi is a given.
Here are the 6 housing options available on a short-term basis and my perspective.
VBRO: Never. They cater to those looking to rent a whole house and are expensive.
Airbnb: My go-to. I like the Superhost rating system, reviews, accountability, and variety. In most countries, I can reliably rent a large studio or one-bedroom for $800-$1200.
Coliving: Occasionally. For instance, in Cote d'Ivoire I rented a room with a private bath in a house, sharing the kitchen, living room, and patio with others. I opted for coliving for security (it was in a gated community) and companionship. (And the pool!)
Hostels: Rarely. Sometimes if I’m looking to make friends in a new city, I book a hostel for a week or two. No privacy, but usually you can find folks to hang out with. Can be fun.
House-sitting / Pet-sitting: Rarely. I do this informally for friends. You have the run of the entire house in exchange for some pet or garden care responsibilities. Use of the car is usually part of the package. No money is exchanged.
Couch Surfing: Once. It was a good experience but the general idea feels a little dicey to me, showing up at someone’s house you don’t know. Also, I like some privacy and a good night’s sleep since I’m working on the road.
My place in Cyprus: a large studio with a balcony and sea view. I also had access to a gym and indoor pool, which I took full advantage of. Price: $998 (reduced from $1,420 after monthly discount).
✴️ Bonus Tip: Always book for 30 days for the discount, even if you don’t stay the entire time.
Would you like to switch houses every few months? Which option speaks to you? How would you decide?
